Chapter Eighteen
Max was an old friend who designed all sorts of trinkets and knick-knacks for private detectives and the general public. Even the NYPD sometimes talked to him about technological advancements in surveillance. He had a real talent for taking what some would consider junk and rigging it up to be something exceptional. Wade had seen him put together a series of hidden cameras from scratch. It had been for a rich lawyer who suspected her husband was cheating on her. She had Max come over and set up cameras all over the house. Sure enough, when she told her husband she was going to work for a long day at the office, he invited his mistress over.
Max made his money from things like that. He had all sorts of clients, but he always complained that he was broke. What that really meant when he said it was that he was stingy. He didnât like to spend money, but Wade didnât really blame him. New York was expensive, after all, and money didnât go far.
Wade closed his eyes and bit his lower lip, holding his breath as the phone rang. âCome on, Max. Pick up!â
The ringing stopped. Wade opened his eyes and listened. He could hear crunching on the other end, followed by a familiar voice. âTruman?â
âHey, buddy. Whatâs going on?â
âYou caught me with my fingers in the chip bag. Iâm just finishing up some lunch,â he said, burping into the line. âExcuse me. How you doing?â
âBeen a lot better, but Iâm still alive. I need to drop by.â
âSure, when?â
âRight now.â
âAlright, man. Everything good, or you in trouble like always?â
âThe latter.â
âFigures.â
âSee you soon, pal. Thanks a million.â
Wade put his phone in his pocket and began walking west. He made it to Central Park West and 72nd Street when he felt like he noticed a man trailing him. Christ, not again. Wade turned and held his arms outstretched. He said in a loud voice, âI suggest you keep walking,â and instantly began to feel pretty dumb when he realized the guy wasnât trailing him at all. The guy looked at him like he was crazy as he walked past.
âWeirdo,â he muttered.
Guess Iâm starting to get a little paranoid, Wade thought as he crossed the street. But he was glad he had been wrong about it. He was in no shape for another fight, not now. He was going to have to do something, however, about what was stressing him out â the fact that he had left two bodies in his apartment.
Part of him thought he should go ahead and go to the cops. And in fact, he decided he would do just that if he wasnât able to get ahold of Montag by tonight. It was a last resort option, and he hoped he didnât have to take it, but he wasnât going to leave those corpses there to stink up the place â and on top of that problem, there was the whole issue with him not informing the police about it which would be a crime itself.
